The very best thing about putting your work out into the world is hearing from people who’ve read it and have had some kinship with your words and imagery. It is so amazing to receive a random email from someone who recounts why their experience with your work moved them and they give you insight into their lives. I’ve learned about fathers and mothers, about other’s peoples experience of losing friends and lovers to HIV, or their experience of the particular landscapes in my novels. I can’t begin to tell you what that feels like. It feels great when a friend tells you they love your book, but I have to admit, it’s even better from a total stranger because with friends, you touch each others lives in so many varied ways, but as a writer, your words are the only way in which a total stranger has an experience of you.
Please let me know what you think of the work by emailing me (email@example.com) or by posting a review on Amazon, Nook or Good Reads. It’s important as it gets the work out there to others who may have their own profound experience (or not!). I guess, for me, more than book sales, it validates the hours upon hours I spend thinking and writing and entering the dark woods of my brain. It makes it all worthwhile.
Enjoy the reading of writer’s books, but let the writer know how you feel, too. It means a great deal!
